More than 100 people have signed up to be friends with Wem’s famous ghost on the social networking site Facebook.

Jane Churm has been dead for more than 300 years but that hasn’t stopped her boasting more than 130 friends on the site.

Her entourage has swelled since the Shropshire Star ran a story last week about her Facebook profile.

She died aged 14 in 1677 after causing a fire that destroyed the town with a candle.

Comments posted on her profile include one from Lorraine Lloyd saying: “Hi Jane what happened that night.”

Shameem Adams said: “Is this true? lol” And Roxy Morgans said: “Hi Jane can you tell me what happened that night.

“I would really like to know. I only just moved down here. Please reply x”

Holly Gill said: “Luv what your doing, think it’s great!! I read about you in the Shropshire Star and thought I’d give u an add xxxx”

Jane has posted a message on the Wem Carnival Appreciation Society’s group page on Facebook telling people about this year’s event on September 5 and informing them that she will manifest again to catch the night procession.

Carnival bosses are baffled how she managed to set up the profile but have praised the “novel” concept.

Recent status updates on the profile include “Jane is haunting the town hall”. Her interests are listed as meeting new people and her favourite television shows are Most Haunted, Arthur C Clarke’s World of the Strange, Rent a Ghost and Sapphire & Steele.

A famous photograph taken in 1995 as the town hall burned to the ground appears to show a young girl standing in the flames, yet the photographer was adamant that there was nobody in the shot at the time. Some people believe it to be the ghost of Jane Churm.
