Three men have today been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with an attack on a man which left him fighting for his life in hospital.

The men, one aged in his late 30s and two in their early 20s, were arrested by detectives more than a week after a 29-year-old man was found critically injured in Urban Gardens, Wellington.

He remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital with multiple injuries including serious head injuries after the incident on Monday, June 1.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Davenport, who was drafted in to set up a Major Investigation Unit (MIU) at Malinsgate Police Station after the attack, said the men were due to be quizzed later today.

Mr Davenport, who has about 20 officers working on the case, said: “I can confirm that we have this morning arrested three men – one in his late 30s and two in their early 20s – on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to this investigation.

“They are currently in custody in Telford and Shrewsbury and we expect to interview them later today.”

Mr Davenport also urged any witnesses with information to come forward.

“This investigation into this assault is a complicated one and we expect it to continue for some time yet.

“Officers from the MIU will continue to work closely with local police officers as we attempt to progress this investigation and I would once again appeal to anyone with information about this incident to come forward and share that information with us,” Mr Davenport said.

He praised the residents for their co-operation during the last week.

“It’s pleasing that so far people within the local community have remained calm and we will continue to provide an increased visible police presence in the area to support and reassure the residents,” he added.

Detectives are studying CCTV in the area to try to piece together the 29-year-old’s movements before witnesses said his car windows were smashed outside his home as he sat inside the car.
