Town start rebuilding
Monday 8th June 2009, 11:38AM BST.
Town’s rebuilding over the summer has already started with the exciting capture of midfielder Craig Disley from Bristol Rovers, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
I say ‘exciting’ because he is an attack-minded midfielder who has the ability to score goals; is a good age at 27 and has experience of playing for a promotion-winning team.
I have been saying for a while that we have been crying out for this type of midfielder and believe he will be a great acquisition.
I only hope that he hasn’t been signed as a replacement for Ben Davies, who has yet to sign a new contract. With the two of them in the side we can expect a lot more goals from midfield which were lacking this season.
There may be question marks over why Bristol Rovers released the player, but hopefully it is because they want a change considering he has been at the club a while.
Another player we have been linked with is the young striker Jake Robinson from Brighton who was released at the end of the season. I can’t say I know a lot about the player, but again there are question marks over why he was released and I think we are better going for experienced players to get us promoted next season.
As well as Davies – Steven Leslie, Chris Humphrey, Kelvin Langmead, Darren Moss and Omer Riza have all been offered new contracts. The only two I have reservations over are Leslie and Humphreys. Both showed glimpses of quality last season, but not on a regular basis and how long do you keep given them to prove themselves at this level?
A priority in the summer is signing a goalkeeper. I would be very happy to get Daniels back, although with West Brom being relegated I am sure he will be given a chance in the Championship to prove himself. A good goalkeeper is crucial to any promotion-winning side but can be very hard to come by. I wouldn’t rule out bringing back Scott Shearer who lost his place in the Wycombe side toward the end of the season.
Town officials have also been busy arranging our pre-season games and although there isn’t one of the ‘Big Four’ to look forward to, ties against West Brom, Tranmere and Leicester should prove to be challenging for the players in order to get ready for the new season.
We also have the traditional Shropshire Cup game against local rivals Telford to look forward to, although I am not sure the competition means as much to our fans as it once did.
