Battle site sign stolen

Monday 8th June 2009, 12:34PM BST.

A plaque marking the site of a historic battle near Oswestry has been stolen.

The plaque, which marks the Battle of Crogen, was unveiled on a bridge at Castle Mill near Bronygarth in March. But it disappeared after it was prised from its mountings over the weekend.

The battle in 1165 is seen as a significant event in the history of the English/Welsh border.

It involved an alliance of Welsh princes led by Owain Gwynedd and the forces of England’s Henry II.

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to call police on 0300 333 3000.
