Home fire man in window dive

Friday 5th June 2009, 10:52AM BST.

A man was injured after diving out of the window of a bungalow in south Shropshire after a blaze broke out at the property today.

The man was treated for cuts to his arms and legs and smoke inhalation following the incident at the bungalow in Knowlegate, Nash, near Clee Hill, at about 6.20am.

Almost 20 firefighters from Tenbury, Ludlow and Cleobury Mortimer tackled the blaze which started in the hallway of the bungalow. The fire was under control shortly after 7am.

Richard Ewels, police spokesman, said: “A man was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. At this stage it is not thought to be suspicious.”

David James, watch manager for Tenbury firefighters, said an investigation was under way.

Early indications show it could be an electrical fire.

Mr James said: “There was one casualty with smoke inhalation and cuts to his arms and legs because he jumped through a window.

“Two people live in the house but one had already left for work. The other was still in bed. he woke up with the smell of smoke.”

He said the bungalow was smoke logged and there was a lot of damage.

Neighbour Paul Phillips said the man had knocked on his door and asked him to call the fire brigade.

He said: “Smoke was billowing out of the chimney and the back window. He jumped out of the window because he couldn’t find his phone or his keys in all the smoke.”
