Ashtray is now a nest for birds

Mrs Burford said the birds had become the talking point in the pub and said customers often sat in the window, watching the mother flying in and out with food for the young.

Mrs Burford, 37, who has transformed the venue into a family pub since taking over last March, said: “We’ve got a porchway at the front of the pub which leads into the beer garden.
“The birds have nested in the middle ashtray on the wall – it started off with the eggs and now they have hatched. The mum keeps coming in and feeding them and then coming back out. We put a sign up and all of the smokers have been brilliant and adhered to the notice.”
The landlady, who runs the pub with her husband, Ian, 48, said their nine-year-old daughter Tanya, had taken a real interest in the wildlife.
“The smokers stand outside and come in and tell us what they’ve seen – it’s a bit of a talking point really,” she said.
She added: “It’s been educational for Tanya because she’s monitored the nest from the start. It’s very sweet to sit and watch.”
