Three firms linked to Wrekin collapse
Thursday 4th June 2009, 1:09PM BST.
Three companies connected to collapsed construction firm Wrekin have gone into liquidation, including one which owed the Shifnal group more than £500,000.
The firms were wound up voluntarily as administrators chase more than £40 million owed to creditors of Wrekin.
The London and Middle Eastern Group, which announced it was taking over Wrekin in 2007, was voluntarily wound up by boss David Unwin.
Mr Unwin was the chairman of Wrekin Construction when it went into administration in March.
He is also the chairman of the Tamar Group, which has a number of subsidiaries including Equatrek (UK) and Britannia Management Services, both of which have also been liquidated.
A statement of Equatrek (UK) of its affairs prepared by Mr Unwin shows the company had no assets on liquidation. It owes £520,697 to Wrekin Construction Company and £352,247 to parent company Tamar.
The company, based at Ilkeston in Derbyshire, went into liquidation last month. A new company called Equatrek Group, registered at the same address, was set up on April 2, with Mr Unwin as its named director.
Britannia Management Services went into liquidation with cash of £7,315 in the bank. It owes £118,177 to Wrekin Construction as part of a total claim from creditors of £298,977.
London and Middle Eastern Group went into liquidation with assets of about £71,500. It owes £306,500 to parent company Tamar.
The Tamar Group is still trading although Mr Unwin’s solicitors say they expect the parent company will also be forced into liquidation as Wrekin administrators Ernst & Young attempt to recoup cash owed to the construction firm.
Wrekin went into administration in March, owing more than £20 million to individual creditors plus another £20 million to its company pension fund.
More than 500 people lost their jobs at the Lamledge Lane site, which was originally founded by the Frain family.
