United announce major shirt sponsorship dealManchester United have secured a major shirt sponsorship deal that will begin in 2010 following the end of their agreement with current sponsor AIG.

United have tied up a four-year deal with another American insurer Aon to start from the 2010/11 season.

No details have been released from either party about the amount of money United will receive from the deal, but reports claim it could be up to £80 million over the course of the four years.

Aon are a Chicago-based firm who specialise in reinsurance, the process of lending money to other insurance companies.

United chief executive David Gill felt the lucrative deal was an important one for the club considering the current economic climate and said it would help ensure United’s position as one of the strongest clubs in the world.

He said: “We are delighted to be entering such an important relationship with a company of the stature of Aon and to have its logo adorn our shirts from the start of the 2010/11 season.

“Today’s announcement clearly strengthens our position as one of the biggest clubs in world football.”

United’s deal with AIG is not being renewed as the insurance company lost billions during the banking collapse at the end of 2008 and has since received a $150 billion (£109bn) bail-out package from the US government.
