MP calls for train station clean-up

Shropshire MP Daniel Kawczynski has accused Network Rail of double standards over its maintenance of Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton railway stations.
He said while Wolverhampton was kept “spick and span”, weeds were allowed to flourish on the tracks at Shrewsbury.
The Tory MP has tabled a Commons motion calling on the firm, which runs the UK’s rail network, and also Arriva Trains Wales to “show more respect for Shrewsbury” and treat its railway station in the same way as Wolverhampton.
Mr Kawczynski said he hoped the move would embarrass the body into action. He said both had a statutory duty to maintain train stations to a certain standard – yet the contrast between the two bases was “startling”.
Mr Kawczynski said: “Whilst weeds are allowed to flourish on the tracks at Shrewsbury, they are sprayed regularly at Wolverhampton. Whilst walls are allowed to peel in Shrewsbury, they are regularly painted at Wolverhampton, and whilst buddleia is allowed to grow from walls in Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton is spick and span.”
An Arriva Trains Wales spokeswoman said Shrewsbury Station was a Grade II-listed structure, which presented some issues with a maintenance programme, but the station was regularly cleaned and tracks cleared and it was looking at major improvements.
