Honda workers return to work in Swindon
Monday 1st June 2009, 12:49PM BST.
Production has resumed at Honda’s factory in Swindon after a four month shutdown.
Workers are returning to the site today after agreeing to receive lower wages and produce fewer cars as part of Honda’s attempts to cut costs.
The car production industry has been one of the worst hit by the recession with all the main manufacturers seeing sales drop drastically.
The Swindon workers have agreed to a three per cent pay cut for the next ten months, while managers have agreed to a five per cent cut.
There have also been 1,300 people taking involuntary redundancy since the shutdown, cutting the workforce at the plant to around 3,400.
Honda has confirmed the plant will now only work at around 50 per cent of its full capacity.
