Glider pilot in fatal crash
Monday 1st June 2009, 10:30AM BST.
A glider pilot was killed when his aircraft crashed on a south Shropshire hillside.
The incident happened at about 3.15pm yesterday at the Midland Gliding Club in Long Mynd, Church Stretton.
Paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service attended but the man, who was in his 40s and from Worcestershire, was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor. No-one else was hurt.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Thomas said: “Crews arrived to find a glider which had crashed to the ground.
“Unfortunately despite the best efforts of staff at the gliding club, the man’s relatives and ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
The Civil Aviation Authority and the south Shropshire coroner have been informed of the incident.
Inspector Amrik Klair, of Shrewsbury police, added: “We understand there were quite a few people in the area at the time and we would very much like to hear from anyone who may have taken any video footage or photographs of the incident or seen what happened.”

Sympathies to family and friends of this man.
I remember as a child in the 1960′s going to the Long Mynd and seeing the Gliders flying there. Indeed I saw an accident one time while I was there but thankfully it wasn’t fatal. All I remember was that it was a woman pilot and the Glider had the letter “K” on the side of it.
But I pray that this weekends incident was a one-off accident and does not discourage others from taking part in this hobby.

My sympathies,
luckily gliding is a fairly safe sport, so this kind of thing happens very rarely, so when it happens it makes it even more shocking.
A fellow glider pilot
