Campaigners in traffic pledge

Campaigners worried about the impact of a 3,000-seat sports stand near Oswestry have vowed to fight on to ensure it does not bring traffic chaos on match days.
Despite neighbours’ concerns, The New Saints Football Club has been given the go-ahead to build the stand at its ground at The Venue, Park Hall.
The Welsh Premier League outfit needs the stand to host Europa League games next season.
The go-ahead was given by Shropshire Council’s interim regulatory planning committee on Thursday on the condition the club provides a “green travel plan” to halt potential traffic chaos on match days.
The proposal sparked a wave of protest from people living in Park Hall who are concerned about the impact of the arrival of visiting fans – and up to 1,500 cars.
Despite reassurances from the club that the travel plan would keep most of the traffic away from the stadium through park-and-ride systems, residents still fear the stand could bring traffic congestion to the area.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Whittington Parish Council chairman, today said opponents would keep the pressure on planners to ensure the travel plan was effective.
He said: “It is important to say Park Hall residents are not against the club getting a new stand but they are concerned about the impact it will have on traffic.
“Our concerns will remain until we see the fine detail of the travel plan and are reassured that the travel plan will stop any traffic problems.
He added: “Until we feel reassured we will keep an eye on the situation. We will keep our campaign going until we see all the details and are happy with them.”
