Batting collapse so costly

Monday 1st June 2009, 2:11PM BST.

cricket-ballShrewsbury were left to rue a late batting collapse as they suffered a Birmingham League premier division defeat at Kidderminster, writes JAMES GARRISON.

The London Road men looked well placed to register a competitive total as they reached 90-0 off 18 overs and 187-3, but were eventually dismissed for 208.

Cardiff University ace Ryan Bishop led the way with 100 while Ed Foster made 52.

But those two players and Rob Foster fell in quick succession and Joe Leach was the only other player to reach double figures as Shrewsbury capitulated.

And despite an early wicket for Mike Barnard, Kidderminster eased home for the loss of five wickets with Shropshire captain James Ralph making 56.

“It was very disappointing because we were in such a good position,” said Foster.

“Ryan batted fantastically and Kidderminster were saying that they would have been happy to restrict us to 290 at one stage.

“There were a couple of poor umpiring decisions along the way but we shouldn’t have fallen away as we did.

“It just proves you can’t afford any lapses in concentration at this level.”

Wellington returned from Coventry & NW with 14 points after a winning draw.

The Orleton Park men had appeared in trouble at 19-3, but 104 from contracted player Kadeer Ali and an unbeaten 56 from Asif Sultan helped them to 221-7.

But they couldn’t force the victory as Coventry ended on 192-7.

“It was disappointing not to get the win but their opener batted 30 overs for 32 and batted both us and them out of the game,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor.

Shifnal, who entertain Wellington next week, were forced to settle for a losing draw at West Bromwich Dartmouth.

Adam Shimmons, Ian Mills and Stuart Blount each took two wickets as Dartmouth posted 232-7.

Most of the Shifnal batsmen made starts, with Ed Home top-scoring with 46 and Blount making 30, but the visitors eventually finished on 182-7.
