Davies weighs options as Town wait

Saturday 30th May 2009, 1:55PM BST.

A desire to test himself at a higher level could prove the only stumbling block to Ben Davies signing a new contract with Shrewsbury Town.

That is the verdict of former Aston Villa and Port Vale midfielder Ian Taylor, who is now serving as Davies’ ‘football consultant’.

The midfielder is mulling over the offer of a new two-year contract from Town, but is also believed to have attracted options from clubs further up the Football League pyramid.

Considering

And that could prove a tempting prospect for the midfield maestro, who has never played any higher up than the bottom tier of the Football League in a career that has taken in Kidderminster and Chester before joining Shrewsbury.

“I think Ben is still considering his options at the minute,” said Taylor.

“The main thing for Ben is not the money, it’s whether he wants to play in League Two for another season.

“He wants to play at the highest level he can, but there’s nothing definite that has been decided at the moment.”

Taylor was remaining tight-lipped on the clubs to have shown an interest in the gifted playmaker, but did confirm that Championship and League One clubs had inquired about his services.

Davies, who turned 28 on Wednesday, has been given until Tuesday by boss Paul Simpson to make a decision – along with the other five players to have been offered new terms.

Davies, defender Kelvin Langmead, midfielder Steve Leslie and winger Chris Humphrey are all considering two-year deals, while full-back Darren Moss and forward Omer Riza have one-year contracts on the table.

As a visitor to Wembley last week, In my opinion Ben Davies doesn’t have the pace to step up a level or two. Twice he was almost through 1 on 1 and twice he was caught up by the defender. Says it all really – that’s the difference these days
