County to enjoy weekend scorcher
Saturday 30th May 2009, 11:50AM BST.
People across Shropshire will be able to bask in the warm sunshine this weekend as forecasters predict hot and sunny weather – saying barbecues and picnics should be a safe bet.
And tomorrow could be a scorcher – with experts predicting it will be the hottest day of the year.
But people are advised to make the most of the summer sunshine because temperatures are due to drop dramatically next week.
John Warner, Shropshire Star weatherman, said: “It was up to 23C and 24C yesterday. There will be more wall-to-wall sunshine today and continuous blue skies and temperatures up to 23C and 24C again.
“We are keeping the sun out for a few more days but I think perhaps by the middle of next week, the winds will be starting to come in from the north rather than the east so that could bring some colder weather and then it will be more cloudy as well so the best weather is between now and the start of next week.”
The Bank Holiday sunshine sparked a 364 per cent jump in barbecue sales at Tesco, who predict they will sell about 1.2 million burgers over the weekend.
A less sunny outlook came from Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) who have warned about the risks of a cooling swim.
RoSPA claims that in previous years there has been a link between hot weather and a rise in accidental drowning deaths.

Absolutley AMAZING….
“RoSPA claims that in previous years there has been a link between hot weather and a rise in accidental drowning deaths”.
So – let me get my head round this….
1 Hot weather
2 More people go into water to cool off
so …
3 Assuming there is a finite “risk”
that is: so many incidents per 1000 (say)swimmers ….of getting into difficulty when in water ….
then …..
wait for it ….
4. so MORE people get into difficulty !
Hardly surprising is it RoSPA??!!
True genius I have to say !!
Masters of statistics and logic .. WOW!

And just to complete the picture….
Can RoSPA also comment on:
“The Bank Holiday sunshine sparked a 364 per cent jump in barbecue sales at Tesco, who predict they will sell about 1.2 million burgers over the weekend”
So….
Does this mean more incidents of:
1 People getting injured (i.e burnt etc ) running barbeques, and
2 An increase in food poisoning incidents?
and finally,
3. Links to Obesity ?
(This HOT weather has a LOT to answer for! – should be BANNED … cue: Health and Safety …)
Never mind – the cold weather will be back soon, and then we can worry about getting wet, flooding, thunderstorms, and anything else that is remotely dangerous that might … just might … affect or disrupt us from our ultra safe cautious and cocconed in cotton wool 21st century existence.
Good grief!! – How my parents (and us)survived the 2nd world war and tough conditions into the late 40,s and 50′s I’ll never know !
