Armed police in arrest of suspect

Saturday 30th May 2009, 1:30PM BST.

Armed police were called to Albrighton today after a call from a member of the public sparked a three-hour police investigation.

Eye witnesses said up to seven police cars were seen at Bushfields in the village, at the back of the post office and near to the police station, along with about a dozen armed police officers.

A 47-year-old local man was arrested shortly before 2pm. He was due to be questioned about firearms offences following a mental health assessment. He was not armed when police arrested him.

The police investigation was launched after they received a call from a member of the public at 10.52am.

An eye witness said: “There were six to seven police cars and unmarked cars and 10 to 12 police officers standing outside in full body armour and carrying machine guns.

“The staff in the post office said they had asked the police what was happening but they wouldn’t say.”

West Mercia Police force duty inspector Pete Gebbie said: “We had a ‘concern for welfare’ call which necessitated the deployment of armed police officers.

“Currently there is a 47-year-old local man in custody who will be questioned about firearms offences after a mental health assessment.

“On arrest he did not have a weapon in his possession.”

The ambulance service was informed by police but not needed at the scene.
