MP ‘embarrassed’ by colleagues
Friday 29th May 2009, 1:05PM BST.

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski talks about the expenses scandal during a public meeting at the Lord Hill Hotel in Shrewsbury.
A Shropshire MP admitted he was “extremely embarrassed” by the actions of his fellow politicians as he held a public meeting in the wake of the expenses scandal.
Conservative MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham Daniel Kawczynski said at the meeting last night that he would like to see members of the public given the power to remove an MP in whom they had lost trust.
He said: “Constituents should have the right under extreme situations to petition that their MP stand down.”
The meeting at the Lord Hill Hotel, Shrewsbury, comes as the Daily Telegraph revealed today that Mr Kawczynski earns £64,766 a year and claimed £20,060 for his rented London flat from 2005/06, £22,060 for 2006/07 and £21,980 for 2007/08.
It also reported he claimed £70 for a chest of drawers, £109 for an armchair and £142 for a table.
But Geoffrey Clarke, from Shrewsbury, said at last night’s meeting: “Your expenses still seem rather high. It is like the Premiership and you are trying to get to the bottom of the league table. Will there be a special award for the MP with the lowest expenses?”
Mr Kawczynski said his costs could be higher than some MPs as he employed more staff and held more surgeries to provide a good level of service.
Colin Dewse, of Coton Hill, said he would like to know how much the five people Mr Kawczynski employs were paid.
Mr Kawczynski said he was not prepared to reveal the salaries of private citizens but he admitted he pays his wife £20,000 a year to run both his London and Shrewsbury offices.
Speaking about how the last few weeks had felt Mr Kawczynski said: “It has been extremely embarrassing for me. I am very disappointed with some of my colleagues and how they’ve conducted themselves.”
H said today he was “ple-ased” with how the meeting went, adding: “There were a lot of people there with some very good ideas.”
He said he had not seen the Daily Telegraph but the figures sounded about right for the three years that he rented a London flat. He said the cost reflected London prices and it was unfurnished when he moved in.
At the meeting Mr Kawczynski asked those present to raise their hand if they would like him to give up his Shrewsbury office to save more money. He said nobody he saw raised their hand.
Mr Kawczynski gave up his London flat last year because he said he wanted to save taxpayers’ money.

I notice on this mornings TV news that almost in the same breathe they reported that multi-millionaire Bill Cash was defending his claims for payments to his own daughter for rent then reported a mother is being sued for making false home address claims to get her child into a favoured school.. and someone said irony is dead!

A shame Chelsea Barracks was sold off cheap, an ideal London location for MP’s flats, what is needed is a Holiday Inn style block of flats, – all the same, no expenses to be paid out. Thats what they did for our branch of the Dept of Employment.
Another suggestion, why not requisition the Olympic Village after the Olympics for MP accommodation?
It will even have its own moat!
Any of us would have been sacked on the spot, for fraud or misrepresentation.
I wonder what expenses an MEP gets, second home in London, third home in Brussels, fourth home in Strasborg?

“…he pays his wife 20,000 a year to run both his London and Shrewsbury offices…” Nice to know he’s keeping it in the family.

Nothing wrong in employing your better half it probably works out cheaper.

I contact the local office to attend the Thursday meeting but no one came back on my message.
DK has very upwardly mobile expenses, originally second quartile on entry to Parliament but now very much upper quartile. Comparing DK expenses to Dennis Skinner (an East Midlands MP so similar topography and distance from London) DK incidental expenses are £22000 per annum against DS £1000. DK spends £85000 on his office support, DS £45000. DK spends £23000 on additional costs expenses, DS spends £10000. DK spends £11000 on travel, DS spends £5000. DK in all spends 150% more then DS, roughly the equivalent of a 100 pupil school per year. I wonder if this data was raised at the meeting on Thursday? I expect not.

Cedric Gung, relative to what other MPs are claiming for “staffing”, this is possibly the cheapest claim amongst the lot of them. As for employing relatives, what better than an MPs wife to hold the fort and do the work in the office, just the same as the village Doctor’s wife, Parish Priest’s wife, village coppers wife etc.
For your information, Michael Foster, Labour MP for Worcester claims £86,832 for staffing and almost 80% of MPs employ relatives. What about our esteemed Home Secretary, Jacquie Smith, Redditch, she pays her husband £40,000 per year for being the dogsbody in the office and second home ( her first home is a back bedroom in her sisters house in London) and he can’t be worth 1000th of that, if he can put dirty films on his wife’s expense account, then I wouldn’t employ him as a shoe cleaner but the money comes in handy for the family finances no doubt.
Danny Boy is cheap at the price and his wife should demand a rise.
