Trainer escapes collision unhurt
Thursday 28th May 2009, 10:09AM BST.
A Shropshire point-to-point trainer escaped injury when the horsebox containing her hunter chaser crashed as she was driving to a meeting in Huntingdon.
Kelda Wood, 36, who is based at Gatton Lodge Stables, near Pontesbury, Shrewsbury, was travelling with her horse and Ben Poste, brother of jump jockey Charlie Poste, when the incident happened on the A14 in Cambridgeshire.
The vehicle collided with the crash barrier and with a motorcyclist but everybody escaped injury.
Kelda said today: “We had a blow-out on the driver’s side front wheel. The lorry veered straight across the road and hit the crash barrier and then turned over and went about 50 yards on its side.
“Honestly if you saw the wagon you would not believe we all escaped in one piece.”
Kelda was travelling to her horse Fresh Love’s last meeting of the season when the accident happened at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.
She said: “Fresh Love was seen by a vet there. He stayed down in Huntington but we picked him up yesterday. He seems all right. He has superficial grazing.
“We were just shaken and a bit bruised. It was completely out of control. The fuel tank was split in half and there was fuel everywhere. We wanted to get out but my leg was trapped under the dashboard.”
Kelda managed to free herself before emergency services arrived but today praised them for their help.
