Tortoise rescued from road
Thursday 28th May 2009, 9:27AM BST.
A runaway tortoise had a lucky escape today when a van driver spotted it crawling across a busy Shropshire road.
He picked up the wanderer and dropped it off at Bridgnorth Police Station where it is currently in “custody”.
Shropshire police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “This large tortoise was found by a van driver at 8.55am today on Stourbridge Road, near Stanmore Cottage.
“He spotted it in the middle of the busy road and was very concerned that it would be squashed.
“Bridgnorth Police Station is only just round the corner so the driver popped it there for safekeeping. One of our officers there is a bit of a tortoise expert and has identified it as a female.”
Mr Ewels added: “It’s at least a foot long, appears to be in good health and almost certainly belongs to someone in the Stourbridge Road area.”
The owners can contact police on 0300 333 3000.
