Market plans cause concern
Thursday 28th May 2009, 11:17AM BST.
Fears have been raised by councillors that proposals to relocate Oswestry’s farmers’ market could be “destructive”.
At an Oswestry Town Council markets and car parks committee last night, councillors were told there has been a “significant fall” in stallholders attending the monthly farmers’ market on Bailey Head.
It has led to calls from traders to be re-sited in a more central location, such as Central Car Park.”
Councillors were asked to consider the move on a trial basis for six months.
Councillor Martin Bennett proposed they agreed in principle but said a report was needed into costings and how many would come to a different location.”
Councillor Betty Gull said there had been “very strong opinions against moving the farmers market” at a market liaison meeting.
Councillor Peter Cherrington said that “at the end of the day fragmentation of the market would only be destructive”.
