Diane Cooper and Richard Horton faced trial by Jeremy Kyle

This Shropshire couple played a game of secrets and lies live on The Jeremy Kyle TV show – and after facing the dreaded lie detector test the pair got engaged.

Diane Cooper, 40, and Richard Horton, 44, from Telford, applied to go on the hit ITV morning chat show – famed for testing people’s true colours with lie detectors – after Diane said she wanted proof her boyfriend of six months was 100 per cent faithful.

Filming the episode, Richard was put through his paces with three tests to find out whether he had ever cheated during his relationship with Diane.

And in a tense revelation in front of a studio audience, the results were announced showing Richard had told the truth the whole time and had not cheated on Diane.

Having put her mind at rest, three weeks later at a karaoke session in The Beacon Pub in Copthorne, Shrewsbury, Richard went down on bended knee in front of another audience and proposed. Diane said yes and they are now planning a wedding for next year.

Diane today said: “I have known Richard for seven years but we only started to get together at the end of last year.

“He was still with his ex then but when he told her about me she wasn’t bothered.

“Then I found out he was friendly with another woman and I just wanted some answers.”

Following the show, Diane said she now trusted Richard 100 per cent.

should we tell them that “lie detector” tests don’t actually work, and in fact are only used on the Jeremy Kyle show. The FBI, MI5, et al stopped using them years ago because they’re almost impossible to calibrate if the the test subject has an IQ of over 4.

Oh hang on, they went on the Jeremy Kyle show, yeah in that case the calibration probably worked fine. Good luck y’all.

I’ve watched Jeremy Kyle on a few occasions and the type of people that feature always appear to be of the same type. Why does a couple of their age need ‘lie detectors’. If they don’t trust each other, don’t have a relationship. It’s obvious by going on Jeremy Kyle and contacting the Shropshire Star to tell them they are only after media attention. Sad indicament of todays society.

Aaah, what a lovely-looking couple. I hope that they’ll be very happy together.

My only question is, why just test the bloke?

Surely he should have insisted on checking her fidelity before tying the knot – it would have been only fair, and would have given them both the reassurance that a loving couple like this need.

So she never believes what he says and every time she asks him a question they will have to pull out a lie detector?
