Betty’s bucketful of adventures

betty-stevensHollywood hit The Bucket List inspired one Telford great-grandmother to pilot a plane for the first time at the tender age of 76 – and she has not finished her adventures yet.

Betty Stevens, of Dale Acre Way, Hollinswood, has drawn up her own Bucket List – a list of things you want to do before you “kick the bucket” – and a flight over Shropshire was near the top.

Her family – she has nine children, 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren – all chipped in to buy her a plane flight from Halfpenny Green airfield near Bridgnorth.

And Mrs Stevens got to handle the controls during her one-hour trip at the weekend.

The sky ride was just Mrs Stevens’s latest adventure after she set about ticking off tasks on her list.

While on holiday in Turkey last year she jumped into a swimming pool fully clothed – one of her wishes – and at the NEC in Birmingham she also went to see operatic pop singers Il Divo.

She is now making plans to plough through the rest of her list and faces some unusual tests – like where to find a vineyard where she can tread grapes?

Mrs Stevens said: “I want to go on a cruise and hopefully I will be doing that with two of my daughters this summer.

“Also, I want to ride on the famous Orient Express but as I’m only a pensioner I think that is going to take some saving up.”
