County triathletes in a hurry

james-emeryShropshire athletes made their mark as the triathlon season was launched with the sell-out Sprint Triathlon at Chirk.

A large field competed in the energy-sapping event, which was hosted by Wrexsamtri on a picturesque race route with spectacular views of the Chirk countryside.

Dry weather brought out a great number of spectators to support both novices and experienced triathletes as they put their winter’s training to the test.

Paul Hawkings, of the New Torq team, took the men’s race with a storming 58 minutes and 30 seconds – only the second athlete to go under the hour.

Shrewsbury athlete James Emery, also of the Torq club, gave a strong performance to secure fifth place overall in a time of 1hr 2mins 11 secs.

Matt Hart, of Torq Limited, a sports nutritional company based in Westbury, was pleased to see the new Torq tri team take two places in the top five in a strong field in the opening race of the season.

A number of other Shrewsbury-based athletes put in strong performances, competing for the newly formed SYtri club, MSW and Shrewsbury Masters.
