An independent shop in Shrewsbury has beaten thousands of other stores to be crowned the best gift retailer in the country.

Wysteria Lane in Dogpole was named The Greats Independent Retailer of the year 2009 at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, by comedian John Bishop in front of 500 guests and TV cameras.

The independent shop was nominated by its suppliers for the prestigious gift retailing award.

Michelle Jamie, owner of Wysteria Lane said she was delighted with the award, especially as it had come just two-and-a-half years after opening the shop in Dogpole.

She said: “I’m really proud and pleased that Wysteria Lane won Independent Retailer of the Year 2009.

“None of this would be possible without the support of our suppliers, customers and of course local press coverage.”

Michelle said she thought the shop was chosen for its unique products and friendly customer service – with the key being the beautiful gift wrapping.

The Greats were launched by Progressive Gifts & Home magazine in 2003.
