Flood-hit shop to reopen
Tuesday 26th May 2009, 12:34PM BST.
A Shrewsbury shop which suffered extensive damage after a burst water main caused its ceiling to collapse and water to gush in is set to reopen on Monday – just two weeks after the flood.
Bosses at The Amplifon Hearing Centre in Mardol say they are facing a £7,000 repair bill following the incident on May 18.
Workmen will go into the premises today to start work which involves putting in a new ceiling, carpets and furniture.
It is the second time the centre, which employs three full-time and two part-time staff in the town, has been flooded in five months.
The centre had to rent a room at the Prince Rupert Hotel to see clients while the damage was assessed with fears the building could be closed for up to two months.
But Dave Jennings, a district manager with Amplifon, today said he was hopeful the repairs would be complete by the end of this week with the centre possibly able to reopen next week.
He said the owner of the property had also allowed them to use another office unit on the opposite side of the road so they did not have to use the hotel any more.
Mr Jennings said: “I have got work starting today. There will be a new ceiling, new carpets and some furniture.
“The ceiling was destroyed and there were little bits of technical gear that got soaked. All in all it’s going to cost about £7,000.”
