Biomass inquiry delayed

Tuesday 26th May 2009, 12:42PM BST.

The results of an inquiry into controversial plans to build a biomass plant in a south Shropshire town have been delayed.

Residents in Bishop’s Castle heard today that the decision would be deferred until further notice.

The matter has been referred to Planning Central Casework, which is part of the Department for Communities and Local Government headed by MP Hazel Blears.

The Planning Inspectorate is seeking an opinion on whether the original application should have included an independent Environmental Impact Assessment.

Karen Bavastock, chair of the Bishop’s Castle Group, which opposed the application, said: “We are naturally disappointed that we still do not have a decision.”

Sarah Banwell, case officer for the inquiry at the Planning Inspectorate, confirmed the inquiry had been referred to the local government department.

She said: “We don’t know the new decision date but we will let everyone know in due course.”
