Queen will not abandon her role

The royal chauffeurThe latest breach in royal security won’t deter our brave Queen from carrying on regardless, writes royal correspondent Shirley Tart

She once found a strange man – in a number of ways – sitting on her bed. Dodgy individuals have leaped out at during Trooping of the Colour ceremonies.

Her daughter was ambushed in the Mall.

And her grandson’s 21st birthday party was invaded by an odd, even disturbed, individual in a woman’s frock who scaled the walls of Windsor Castle, setting off numerous alarms before being nabbed. Just a few intrusions into modern royal life.

You could say the Queen’s security is vulnerable.

This latest scare with clever clogs journalists showing how by paying a chauffeur they got access to a royal limousine – one of them even pictured sitting where Her Majesty always sits – is the 2009 version of storming the safety barricade.

Yes, yes, yes we know – if they’d had a bomb, it could have been absolute disaster. But they didn’t and it wasn’t.

And while quite properly hanging the driver out to dry, the Queen will be as stoic about this latest scare as she always has been.

Throughout her reign, she has known that she was always a target for the mad, those who deliver terror by the bucketful, the vengeful, fanatics or bright sparks thinking they can make a valid point about her safety by breaching it.

And she has never flinched from carrying on regardless, has never locked herself away, never cancelled a tour and never neglected her duty.

Yes, we could keep her even safer. Behind barbed wire, electric fences, 24-hour snipers, treble bullet proof cars, dark windows, sinister outriders and all that sort of stuff.

Presidents may be tempted. Our Queen is not.

She is sensible, takes proper advice, does her best to minimise risk but will not abandon her role amongst her people.

And so she travels in open carriages, cars with wide windows, rides her horse across open ground and since she invented the walkabout, makes sure she still does it!

I’m not at all sure about the merits of proving that her security is open to abuse – after all, even the best system will fall if crooked types take cash for betrayal.

Nevertheless, they will all be watching a bit closer at the back of the palace where the cars are parked. But the harsh truth remains, the Queen is always a target, she knows it and she continues her job despite any real or perceived dangers. She’s a braver lady than many!

    Good Grief !!

Whilst not specifically being a Royalist, I really don’t Think Shirley Tart has ANY idea of just what strength of character the queen posseses.

If she did – She would see no point in writing such rubbish.

I think her lack of observation of the stength and commitment of the Royal family demeans the whole issue.
The Queen, and others like her KNOW their place – and don’t EVER give up in the face of adversity. It’s a pity her government can;t operate in the same way.

Really Shropshire star … As someone else said “If you can’t produce good news articles, then just sell more advertising .. (it would make better reading.

As my English teacher would have marked this:

    2 out of 10 …. See me.

Yes – who needs The Telegraph with their revelations about MPs’ expenses when our county paper can deliver this standard of hard-hitting, fearlessly unbiased investigative journalism?
