The Bridgnorth Walk gets under way

People basked in “wall to wall sunshine” in Shropshire as temperatures in the county reached the highest so far this year.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner described yesterday as “the most glorious day you could ever possibly imagine” with temperatures reaching 20C (68F). And despite the threat of rain today people took to the streets of Shropshire and Mid Wales to take part in a range of Bank Holiday events.

A colourful sea of more than 1,000 walkers set off to raise cash for charity in Bridgnorth’s 43rd sponsored walk.

Among the walkers was a group of more than 80 youngsters sporting yellow T-shirts in memory of Bridgnorth teenager Aiden Brookes, who died when a sandstone cave collapsed last month.

Nearly 1,200 people set off on the 22-mile route up to the Brown Clee and back to the town again. Hundreds of visitors were also due to pack out the streets of Welshpool this afternoon for its annual carnival.

Residents and businesses were putting the finishing touches to their costumes and floats ready for the grand parade through the town centre.

Organisers were also keeping their fingers crossed that the weather would be kind to the event at the Maesydre Recreation Grounds.

And hundreds of Shropshire music fans enjoyed a long weekend of sunshine at an event featuring top tribute acts.

The aptly named No More Rain Music Festival was held at the West Mid Showground in Berwick Road, Shrewsbury, on Friday, Saturday and yesterday.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said: “Yesterday was the most glorious day you could ever possibly imagine. Along with wall to wall sunshine and very light winds, temperatures got up to 20C in Shrewsbury, which is the highest so far this year.

“There are some thunderstorms just about reached the south coast and they will spread northwards. I think Shropshire will be on the edge of these and by midnight they should all be cleared away. Tomorrow is going to be bright and breezy with just the odd shower.”
