Graham Coughlan and Gillingham's Dennis Oli battle for the ball

Graham Coughlan and Gillingham's Dennis Oli battle for the ball

5pm: Gillingham lift the winner’s trophy. Such a shame for Town who battled hard and perhaps shaded the second half. Onwards and upwards for Town next season!

4.54: Replays show the corner which won the game should never have been given. It was a goal-kick after coming off Barcham’s knee. A real sickener for Town.

4.53: Town’s players are left distraught, many slumped on the Wembley turf, as Gillingham celebrate their promotion to Coca-Cola League One.

4.52: Final whistle. Shrewsbury Town 0 Gillingham 1

4.50: Ben Davies gets a great ball in from the left, Coughlan tries to get on the end of it but Royce just does enough to put him off.

4.49: Gillingham have a corner with just a minute left in injury time. Surely it’s too late for Town now.

4.48: Gillingham corner from the left, Jackson is not picked up in the six yard box and steers his header in at the far post despite the efforts of the defender on the line to put Gillingham 1-0 up with just injury time to go.

4.47: GOAL GILLINGHAM Simeon Jackson scores on 90 minutes.

4.46: Holt nearly gets the better of King after a long ball forward but gives away a free kick, despite his protestations of innocence.

4.45: Ashton comes across to make a great clearance as Gillingham threaten to break through.

4.44: It’s nip and tuck now with no clear-cut chances as the minutes tick by. Town have certainly given as good as they have got in the second half.

4.40: Lewis does brilliantly to get past his man but Jackson is off-side when he tries to realease him into the box to cross the ball.

4.39: Coughlan gets in a vital toe as Gillingham threaten to break quickly in to the Town penalty area.

4.37: Riza battles for the ball on the byline and brings it away only to be pulled up for a foul.

4.35: Another substitution for Shrewsbury. Omer Riza replaces Nick Chadwick up front. Town are looking much better now, battling for the ball and putting Gillingham under some pressure.

4.31: First change for Shrewsbury. Murray is replaced by David Worrall in midfield.

4.30: Brilliant build-up sees Ben Davies burst in to the box but he just can’t quite get it out from under his feet. Corner results and Coughlan heads the ball back into the hands of Royce.

4.28: Humphrey floats the ball in from the left but Grant Holt just can’t get across his defender.

4.27: Another free kick to Town inside the Gillingham half, Davies’ ball goes straight through to Royce.

4.26: Town are holding a much higher line in the second half, despite the threat from Gills’ front three. And its paying dividends as they deny their opponents the space to play.

4.25: Holt tees up Davies a long way out but the midfielder still has a go only to see it fly wide.

4.22: Ashton’s ball into the area  is headed back into the danger area and McIntyre has a great chance but doesn’t make a good contact with his head and the ball dribbles out for a goal kick.

4.20: The attendance is in 53,706 – the second highest for the League Two play-off final.

4.19: Oli tries a clever flick in for Jackson on the edge of the Town box, but Coughlan is equal to it and heads the ball back for Daniels.

4.17: Town are starting to pass the ball better. Davies gets a cross in on the right which is claimed by Royce.

4.15: It’s more even in this half.  Holt is booked for a challenge on Oli just inside the Gillingham half.

4.13: Holt tries to release Humphrey, who has swapped wings, on the left-hand side by Royce beats him to the ball. The Town winger needs a bit of treatment after falling awkwardly.

4.11: Weston is felled by Paul Murray just in his own half. Murray is booked. At least Town are getting involved now.

4.10: Best chance so far for Shrewsbury. Coughlan’s free kick is headed into the danger area and Ben Davies fires a volley which Royce is well positioned to save.

4.09: Town win a free-kick on half-way. There’s a bit of afters when Weston won’t give the ball back to Coughlan. Both are booked.

4.07: Ashton is unlucky to concede a free-kick. Nutter’s dangerous ball in is cleared behind by Langmead for another corner. Daniels punches it to safety. Gillingham have had seven corners to Town’s none.

4.05: Another quick free-kick sees Barcham free on the left and his shot is batted away by Daniels for a corner. Another inventive corner from the Gills comes to nothing.

4.04: Better from Town as Holt puts the Royce under pressure and wins a throw in. Holt then gets a cross in which Royce just manages to claim under pressure at the near post.

4.03: No changes for either side at half-time as Gillingham kick off for the second half.

4.02: Another team huddle for the Town ahead of the second-half – hopefully they’ve worked out what went wrong in the first half and they can now put it right.

4pm: Let’s hope the half-time organes are having their effect. Paul Simpson will be working hard in the dressing room to lift his troops for the second half. It’s still all to play for – somehow! Come on Town!!!

3.50: Well, Town have been under the cosh for much of the first-half. Two terrific saves from Luke Daniels, one with the help of Grant Holt, has kept Town in the game. Langmead and Coughlan have been immense at the heart of the defence, but there is little else positive to say at this stage. Except of course it is still 0-0 and Shrewsbury are right in the game.

3.47: HALF-TIME 0-0

3.46. Long throw into the box drops to Wright on the edge of the Town box, his shot through a crowded area is brilliantly saved by Daniels who can only have seen it at the last second.

3.45: One minute of injury time in the first half.

3.43: Coughlan stands firm again as Jackson tries to get the better of him and earns his side a free-kick to release the pressure.

3.42: Oli skins Ashton again but a slightly heavy touch allows Coughlan to get across and clear.

3.39: Jackson picks up the ball on the edge of the box after an attempted clearance by Humphrey but fires his shot wide. Coughlan is shouting at his team-mates to pick up the pace and get into the game.

3.38: Gills lose posession just outside the box, Holt picks up the lose ball and takes a shot from 25 yards but sends his right foot effort high and wide.

3.36: Gills central defender King finds himself in a great position on the edge of the penalty area but can’t get his shot away.

3.35: Ben Davies takes the free-kick from 35 yards for the foul on Chadwick, but curls it wide as Gillingham keeper Royce scrambles across his goal to ensure it doesn’t creep in. Town’s first real shot at goal.

3.33: Chadwick caught by an elbow and needs treatment from the Town physio. Gives his side time to catch their breath and plot how to respond to Gillingham’s great start. It’s still 0-0 though.

3.31: Plenty for Paul Simpson to ponder as Gillingham continue to dominate. Town aren’t coping well with the short corners and are struggling to get on the ball.

3.30: Great ball into the box is cleared behind by Moss. But from the corner Nutter’s drive produces a brilliant save from Daniels.

3.28: Town manage to get a bit of possession, but can’t find their targets up front .

3.27: Town get a free-kick in a dangerous position on their right but McIntyre’s ball into the box is too deep and Royce claims it easily.

3.26: Gillingham continue to press but Coughlan and Langmead are getting on the end of everything and clearing their lines for Town.

3.25: Lewis cross into the box is cleared for a throw-in Coughlan.

3.23: Town finally get some possesion, Ashton’s ball into the box is flicked on by Holt but there is no-one to latch on to it.

3.22: Short corner from Gillingham catches Town out and Weston has a clear strike on goal from 20 yards but puts it over. Dangerous signs for the Town as Gillingham dominate possession.

3.21: Oli’s causing Ashton problems on the Town left, and the full-back is forced to bring him down. From the free-kick Coughlan has to put the ball out.

3.20: Gillingham starting to look better on the ball and looking to get some dangerous crosses into the box.

3.17: Oli causes Ashton a few headaches on the Gills right, but Nutter’s ball into the box is easily collected by Daniels.

3.17: Town looking solid at the back, defending deep, but struggling to get Chadwick and Humphrey into the game going forward.

3.15: Holt just can’t collect with Ashton’s ball down into the left-hand channel and toes the ball out for a goal-kick.

3.13: Gills have settled now, Nutter lets fly with a long range effort which is blocked.

3.10: Gillingham corner is cleared by Langmead. Long-range shot is easily blocked.

3.08: Holt almost slides a ball in for Davies on the left-hand side, but it just eludes the Town man.

3.08: The game’s settling down now with both teams snapping into the challenge in midfield.

3.06pm: Hint of a penalty appeal from Town as Ben Davies is challenged by Fuller in the area. No appeal from Davies though.

3.05pm: Dangerous ball into the Town area from a free-kick, and Barcham just can’t get on the end of it.

3.04pm: A Luke Daniels free-kick is headed on by Chadwick and Holt hooks a shot well wide of the post.

3.02pm: The pacy Barcham wins a free-kick just inside the Town half but the Gills fail to capitalise.

3.01pm: Early skirmish in the Gillingham area sees Holt win a header and put the ball into a dangerous area before it is cleared.

3pm: Final huddle for the team before Town kick-off.

2.55pm: Town are wearing their change strip of black with red trim today, and skipper Graham Coughlan introduces the players to the dignitaries, including representatives from the Royal Navy. Then it’s National Anthem time.

2.51pm: The teams are on their way out of the dressing rooms and on to the Wembley turf.

2.50pm: Ten minutes to kick-off, the crowd is building up with over 50,000 expected at Wembley today. Town have lost only two of their last 14 games, time to make that 15!

2.45pm: Plenty of positive options on the bench this afternoon for Simpson if needed – strikers Omer Riza and Moses Ashikodi are both included along with attacking midfielder Dave Worrall also there.

2.40pm: Sky Sports have started their coverage of today’s League Two play-off final with a feature on Town’s goalden guy Grant Holt and talking about the rewards for today’s winners – games against the likes of Leeds, Southampton, Charlton and Norwich.

2.37pm: If you’re following the game with us on-line, feel free to add your comments and we’ll try and include as many as we can during the game.

2.35pm: Gillingham line up as predicted by James Garrison in last night’s Shropshire Star eight page supplement with a 4-3-3 formation – including the dangerous Simeon Jackson up front.

2.31pm: StarSport’s James Garrison and Chris Hudson are at Wembley today – they went for a walk down Wembley Way half an hour ago and report that the atmosphere is fantastic.

2.30pm: One surprise is on the bench where Simpson has decided to include substitute goalkeeper Glyn Garner. It’s the first time Town have gone with a reserve keeper for 11 games – ironically in the 2-2 draw with Gillingham on March 14!

2.25pm: Town boss Paul Simpson has made a couple of changes from the dramatic semi-final second leg victory over Bury. Winger Chris Humphrey has recovered from his hamstring niggle and is back in the starting line-up, while striker Nick Chadwick is preferred to Omer Riza.

2.15pm: Good afternoon, welcome to the Star’s live coverage of Shrewsbury Town’s big day at Wembley.

The team news is in, here it is.

Unlucky Town, think we could of pressed a bit more and Holty was much more like a centre half.. he didn’t seem to have any decent oppertunities. i’m not so obtermistic about next season,, as that pretty much stops me from being diserpointed. i’m goin to carry on supportin the blues home and away.. hopefully simpson will bring in some new lads who will be more than up for the challege and get the town into league 1.
