Meredith leaves the Bucks
Saturday 23rd May 2009, 8:37AM BST.
Full-back James Meredith has fulfiled his aim of playing in the top tier of English non-league football – but not with AFC Telford United after he sealed a shock deal with York City.
The Australian, who spent the season on loan at New Bucks Head from neighbours Shrewsbury Town, had been determined to help Telford win promotion.
But following the pain of defeat in their play-off final at Gateshead, the 23-year-old has instead decided to move to Kit-Kat Crescent and Blue Square Premier football.
Bucks assistant manager Larry Chambers admitted losing Meredith was a blow: “He’s a key player and we’re disappointed to lose him.
“He was a full-time player at Shrewsbury Town and was looking for a full-time move but we are a part-time club.
“York City have been prepared to relocate him and offer him a full-time deal with more money, so as much as it’s a blow for us, we wish him all the best.”
In a statement, the Bucks said: “James Meredith has signed for York City.
“The club did have an offer prepared for James in the hope that we would be able to keep him at the New Bucks Head for next season.
“We were aware that York, and another unnamed higher level club, were also in the hunt for the player and were offering a far healthier package including a solution to his accommodation issues and relocation incentives.
“We wish James all the very best for the future.”
The move comes a day after Telford had better luck in clinching deals to keep midfielders Carl Rodgers, Jamie Vermiglio, Jon Adams and Steve Jagielka at the club for another year.
All four signed after boss Rob Smith started contract talks with nine members of his squad at the beginning of the week.
