Players set to learn their fate

Friday 22nd May 2009, 12:29PM BST.

paul-simpson-42Shrewsbury Town’s players will learn today whether they have made Paul Simpson’s Wembley starting XI.

The Town boss planned to take the wraps off his team – to his players at least – at their Hertfordshire hotel.

But he will not name his five substitutes until 75 minutes before kick-off tomorrow, which is normal procedure for Simpson.

The bulk of the interest amongst supporters will centre around who starts on the right side of midfield, and who is chosen to partner leading scorer Grant Holt in attack.

Chris Humphrey, now fully recovered from a minor hamstring problem and David Worrall are expected to contest the right midfield berth.

And Omer Riza and Nick Chadwick are the favourites to start alongside Holt, while fellow strikers Moses Ashikodi and Richard Walker will also be hoping for a place in the 16.

Simpson must also decide whether to include a substitute goalkeeper, which would be Glyn Garner, amongst his five replacements.

The suspended Steve Leslie and injured duo Mike Jackson and Dave Hibbert are the only players definitely ruled out.

But Simpson has revealed that trio and the other players left out of the 16 will be sitting on the bench.

“Normally there are only 11 places allowed but we have got 21 at Wembley so all the non-playing squad will be part of the bench as well,” he said.

“For me that is brilliant because I’m hoping we will all have something to celebrate at the end of the game.”

Simpson, assistant manager John McMahon and first team coach Stuart Delaney were due to put the squad through their paces for the final time this morning, ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Gillingham.

And they were then heading to Wembley to acclimatise to the surroundings ahead of the big day.
