Holt’s repeat mission
Friday 22nd May 2009, 12:33PM BST.
Grant Holt hopes to notch the biggest achievement of his footballing career – and continue his perfect Wembley record.
While the 28-goal hitman has never played at the New Wembley, he was involved as a schoolboy at the old national stadium.
And he would love to emulate his achievement of a goal and a victory that day against Gillingham tomorrow.
“I played for Inglewood Junior School (in Carlisle) in the 1992 Smith’s Crisps Cup Final at the old Wembley and managed to score,” he said.
“I was a centre half back then and it was a good day so hopefully it can be more of the same tomorrow.
“Obviously it would be nice to score but, as I’ve said all season, it’s the team winning that is the most important thing.
“I’ve been to watch games at the New Wembley but it’s a totally different scenario being stood in that centre circle and seeing all the fans there. I just can’t wait.
“You want to play in the biggest games and it’s another chapter in my career that I can go there and try and win promotion.”
Holt insists victory tomorrow would represent the peak of his footballing days.
“I got promoted last season with Nottingham Forest but towards the end, I wasn’t really involved,” he added.
“To play the majority of games this season and to get to Wembley and win it would be fantastic and the biggest achievement in my career.”
