Action on boy racer problem

Friday 22nd May 2009, 11:52AM BST.

welshpoolBoy racers will be driven out of Welshpool by the overnight closure of one of the town’s car parks, it has been claimed.

Welshpool Town Council says action is now being taken to solve the “boy racing” problem at Maesydre car park.

Councillors say young drivers have been meeting on the council-owned car park, which could now be closed, to race.

Robert Robinson, council clerk, said the issue had sparked a lot of concern.

He said: “The problem has been ongoing for months with young drivers driving around the car park in a very dangerous manner and we as a council are very concerned about it.

“We’ve decided we have no other option but to think about closing Maesydre car park during certain times of the day to try and stop this from happening again.”

He said the proposal to lock the car park would go before councillors at the next council meeting on June 3.

He said: “The recreation committee think we should start using the lock and chain. We propose to open the car park between 8am and to close it at 9am and to open the car park at 3pm and close it at 6.30pm.”

Authorised users will be required to secure it.

I don’t know why they don’t just get a large patch of land that nobody is using, rake some roads round on it and let them play on there…that way residents can sleep in peace, motorists can drive in safety and if they crash and bash themselves up…on their own heads be it!

Its easy to do. The Highway code states dangerous driving when witnessed by police carries a automatic driving ban. In this case why are not more boy racers being banned from driving?

Did I not suggest that the close the gates on a previous thread!!!!!

It beggars belief that they need a meeting to organise closing the gates.

I would tell them about these new fangled electric barriers that you have a card so you can come and go as you please, but I imagine it would take several sub-committees to fathom that one out.

Y Mab: Probably because police don’t make reliable witnesses.

It would mean the Police have to come out of their comfy offices and do some work instead of leaning on the poor motorist who strays a few mph over the speed limit
