Ace Carl Rodgers signs for Telford

Friday 22nd May 2009, 12:37PM BST.

carl-rodgersCarl Rodgers today put the heartache of play-off final defeat to Gateshead firmly behind him and laid the foundations for a fresh promotion bid by pledging his future to AFC Telford United.

Despite taking a pay cut, the gutsy club player of the year, 26, has agreed terms with boss Rob Smith to remain at the New Bucks Head for another year.

Fellow midfielders Steve Jagielka, 31, Jon Adams, 24, and Jamie Vermiglio, 26, have also joined the party by agreeing to stay put on one-year deals.

But it was reported today that defender James Meredith, who spent the season on loan from Shrewsbury, has signed for York.

“Carl was massive for us this year and has become one of the best midfielders in the league so we’re delighted to be able to build the team around players like him,” said Smith.

“Signing Steve was a no-brainer for me as we are operating with a smaller squad next season and he can play anywhere and is respected by myself and the rest of the team.

“It took him about three seconds to sign the deal so we are really pleased to keep him.

“It’s also fantastic for Jon Adams to stay put as he is another one who has established himself as one of our best players,” he added.

Smith also revealed that Vermiglio, battling back to health from a broken back, has been making progress after doctors checked him over ahead of his signing.

Smith, who tabled a string of offers earlier in the week, will now be hoping the capture of Rodgers and three more key players has a positive domino effect on members of the team still mulling over their futures.

Chairman Lee Carter welcomed the news saying: “We want to put together a squad that will challenge for a spot in the top five places in the league so it’s massive news that all the players have decided to stay.”
