Mascot Ethan is on the ball
Thursday 21st May 2009, 10:30AM BST.
This is the boy who will lead Shrewsbury Town’s players out on to the hallowed turf at Wembley for the crunch play-off final on Saturday.
Six-year-old Ethan Wycherley already has the team close to his heart – he is the grandson of club chairman Roland Wycherley.
Meanwhile, when Saturday comes the fortunes of Shrewsbury Town – every kick and every tackle – will be painted in words across the airwaves for fans unable to attend the big match
And the man with the paintbrush is Stuart Dunn – the voice of Shrewsbury Town for BBC Radio Shropshire.
The 36-year-old commentator has followed the highs and the lows of the Shrews for more than a decade, notching up a whopping 750 games.
This campaign, he has been joined behind the mic by expert summariser and former Shrewsbury Town favourite Steve Cross.
The 49-year-old, who played more than 300 games for the club before joining Derby County in 1986, signed up for the job last season. And Stuart is delighted to be linking up with the popular former midfielder.
“Steve featured in the very first Shrewsbury game I watched as an eight-year-old,” said Stuart. “He is great to work alongside and his passion for the club really shines through.”
For both Stuart and Steve, who is married with two sons, covering Shrewsbury is a labour of love. They have both endured countless trips on the road only to see the team come home empty-handed but they have also exploded on the airwaves when Town have bagged the vital three points.
Stuart said: “It’s a privilege to have the role. Sometimes the tension can be close to unbearable as we’ve seen in the last few weeks at Dagenham and Bury. But you have to try and remain focussed, even though there are times, I would gladly look away.”
And they are both delighted that Town are back at Wembley.
“Town have got the players to cause Gillingham problems,” said Stuart.
Stuart, who is married with one son, says he is quietly confident about Town’s chances on Saturday but refuses to be drawn on the outcome. Steve, however, is in no doubt: two-nil to the town, he predicts.
