Stand up for the Ams – and sponsor a seat!
Wednesday 20th May 2009, 5:00PM BST.
Some people sponsor benches and others sponsor players, but grass-roots football fans in Telford are being urged to sponsor a seat in a club’s new all-seater stand, writes Tom Johannsen.
Wellington Amateurs want fans to stump up £25 apiece to permanently etch their names on to seats at their ground in School Grove, Oakengates.
The move comes after the club announced plans to build a 60-seater stand to meet the requirements of the West Midland League’s premier division, which beckons after Ams romped to the division one title this year
Now bosses are appealing to fans and former players to get the cash rolling in and help make the improvements a reality.
Dave Gregory, chairman of Wellington Amateurs, said: “It is a great idea and we have already sold 16 of the seats.
“The contribution will go towards our ground improvement fund and with the work to be done on our ground over the close season. The money will go to good use.
“There must be thousands of ex-Ams footballers and we hope a few of them will be able to make a contribution and help us establish ourselves in our new league.”
The official opening of the new stand will be at the annual pre-season friendly against AFC Telford United, he added.
