McMahon upbeat over Town’s chances

Shrewsbury Town’s class of 2009 are better placed to seal a memorable promotion to League One than the team of two years ago.
That’s the view of assistant manager John McMahon who is one of the survivors amongst the staff of Town’s last play-off final experience.
That ended in the pain of a 3-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury are hoping to taste the elation of victory in Saturday’s showdown with Gillingham at Wembley.
“I think we have got a lot more quality in the squad than two years ago and we are in a stronger position than back then,” said McMahon.
“I think we have got a good group of players who all know each other’s games and know what’s expected this time around.
“We have had a good long season together which will stand us in good stead as well.”
McMahon insists this season’s League results between the two sides – a 7-0 Town victory at the Prostar Stadium and a 2-2 draw at the Priestfield Stadium – will mean nothing on Saturday.
And he is confident Shrewsbury have the players to cope with the occasion.
“It’s special going to Wembley but the set-up will be as normal as possible,” he added.
“It’s a big day – hopefully the lads can come through and produce the goods on the day.”
Formerly a No 2 of previous boss Gary Peters, McMahon has retained his position under Paul Simpson.
And he is full of praise for the work of the manager who has led Town to a third Wembley appearance.
“The gaffer is very professional and everything about him is a pleasure to work with,” said the Scouser.
“I can’t speak highly enough of him. He has been a revelation since he has come to the club.
“He has freshened things up and everything has been bright, lively and sharp.
“He knows players and the standards of what to expect.
“He has been different class.”
