A pair of Shrewsbury Town fans who represent the face and voice of the club will be taking to the hallowed turf of Wembley this weekend for the second time in the last two years.

Ryan Jervis, the PA announcer at the Prostar Stadium, and Ron Millar, better known as the club’s mascot Lenny the Lion, will be at the ground to drum up support for the Town to help spur the team to victory in the League Two play-off final.

The pair were on the pitch at Wembley in 2007, a day when Town lost 3-1 to Bristol Rovers in the play-off final.

The trip to Wembley is another great memory for Mr Millar, 48, from Sutton Farm, who has been the club’s mascot for 14 years – after initially starting out in a very different costume. He said: “I originally started off wearing a penguin outfit when the pitch was snow-covered.

“A player at the time – Darren Rowbotham – used to do a penguin walk when he scored.

“I thought it would be a nice idea and went and got a penguin suit and the club was quite keen to get a mascot and let me do it. It all stemmed from there and the radio had a phone in and asked what Shrewsbury Town were doing with a penguin. A poll was used and Lenny the Lion was born.”

Mr Jervis, 59 and headteacher at Adcote School for Girls at Little Ness near Shrewsbury, has been the PA announcer for Town since 1978.

His first season ended with the team getting promoted, a feat he hopes will be repeated this year.
