Bid to beat doorstep conmen
Wednesday 20th May 2009, 11:02AM BST.
Doorstep conmen who trick vulnerable and elderly people out of hundreds of pounds will be targeted in a huge rogue trader crackdown launched in Telford today.
The conmen who visit the homes of vulnerable people and often carry out unnecessary work but charge large amounts of cash will be stopped in their tracks.
Officers from the Central England Trading Standards Authorities (CEnTSA) have teamed up with Telford & Wrekin Council, Shropshire Council and the police to target the workmen.
Today’s operation is part of Rogue Trader Awareness Month 2009 and will see warrants executed, automatic number plate recognition checks and spot checks on traders.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Parsons, of West Midlands Police, said: “The people responsible for this type of crime prey on the most vulnerable in our communities.”
