Any case for legalising drugs?

drugs1Letter: Is there a case for legalising drug use?

Before I make the case for, let me first assure everyone who may read this that I am in no way in favour of young people having access to any drugs that are not prescribed by a member of the medical profession.

It is reported (Shropshire Star, May 12) that the head of enforcement at the Serious Organised Crime Agency says the drug busts in the UK have helped force up the price of cocaine.

Is this good news or bad?

It is already well known that much of the burglary, muggings and shoplifting offences are due to drug addicts raising money to feed their habit.

Surely the increased price will only lead to even more of these types of offences?

We already have two of the most addictive drugs legalised – tobacco and alcohol – from which the Treasury makes huge amounts of money. Why not legalise drug use of all kinds and create a medical department to recommend ways of administering the distribution?

One way would be to undercut the criminal gangs and give access through a drug rehabilitation centre in every town.

You make a lot of good points here.
I see from a Labour election leaflet I received yesterday that the Liberal Democrats have seen the sense in this. Shame that Labour have not had the courage to carry on with what they started a few years ago and continue developing initiatives in this direction. Instead they consider winning votes from those less knowledgable about the subject is a safer way to go.
Shame that we only seem to hear Lib Dems policies from other parties however.

The access to all kinds of drugs via the internet is going to mean further education will be needed to try and make people think more carefully about what choices they make.
