Shropshire athletics is on the up after several new championship bests and AAA Grade 1 performances were recorded at the Shropshire Athletic Association’s Track and Field Championships, writes Paul Sanderson.

Athletes from all the clubs and many schools and colleges contributed to a full day at the Telford Stadium, organiser Richard Eastman from Bridgnorth AC delighted by a big increase in entries – with 365 athletes taking part.

Bridgnorth AC’s Beth Martin produced a double gold performance in winning the Under-13 girls 100m in a Grade 1 time of 13.6 and 28.7 for the 200m.

Anna Oloyede from Oswestry, also collected two first places with a Grade 1 high jump victory clearing 1.42m and a long jump win with a jump of 3.85m.

Shrewsbury’s Hannah Bridgwater was an impressive winner in the Under-15 girls 75m hurdles winning the final in 12.0 a Grade 1 time, after running even faster 11.8 in the heats.

Telford AC’s Nancy Ndure went home with two golds after winning the high jump (1.49m) and long jump 5.01m which is a Grade 1 performance, just two centimetres ahead of Bridgwater who also achieved a Grade 1 performance – the only event on the day with more than one Grade 1 performance.

In the Under-17 womens age group Telford AC’s Sophie Worrall, also produced two impressive Grade 1 performances in winning the 80m hurdles in 12.2 and the long jump 5.43m.

Hayley Rubery added 50 centimetres to the previous Championship Best as she soared over 2.90m to win the pole vault. She also won the discus throwing 31.72m.

Rebecca Fagan, from Albrighton, won the shot with a Grade 1 performance of 10.13m while Jessica Bailey, from Telford AC made a great start to the track season winning both the 800m in 2.25.3 and 3000m in 11.04.1.

English Schools high jump champion Beth Partridge comfortably won the junior women’s high jump clearing 1.70m and triple jump with a jump of 11.55m, both Grade 1 performances.

Amelia Reynolds, last year’s winner of the President’s Cup for the best female performance on the day, was a triple winner – in the discus 23.64m, hammer 17.35m and shot 7.72m.

She was also second in the 1500m.

Natalie Bathers from Oswestry was a double winner in the 100m in 13.1 and long jump, with 5.38m.

Laura McGawn from RAF Cosford was a triple winner in the senior women’s 100m 12.4, 100m hurdles in 15.6 and high jump in 1.55m.
