Inquiry told of mine health risks

Tuesday 19th May 2009, 3:27PM BST.

The people of Telford are overwhelmingly opposed to an opencast coal mine, with residents united in their fear mining would harm their health and wreck their lives, it was claimed today.

Campaigner Pat Judson said he was speaking for the whole community when he declared: “This is a mine too far.”

Mr Judson, leader of Friends of the Ercall, today outlined the “people power” opposition to a mine in the fourth week of a public inquiry.

An independent inspector has until now been hearing expert witnesses in support of UK Coal’s bid to extract 900,000 tonnes of coal from Huntington Lane, between New Works and Little Wenlock.

Mr Judson, 50, who took early retirement from his job as a Government contractor, said he was no technical or legal expert, but he firmly believed he was speaking for the vast majority of ordinary people, who lived in the shadow of The Wrekin and Ercall beauty spots, close to Huntington Lane.

He said: “There are no more than a handful of letters in support of UK Coal’s proposal.

“There are more than 1,500 against the mine, including petitions, local councillors and both MPs.”

Mr Judson said that he had been brought up in the area and previous generations of his family had been involved in small-scale coal mining.

“I am not against coal mining, but I am against opencast mining,” he added.

Mr Judson said people were terrified at the potential health risk caused by dust whipped up by winds blowing round The Wrekin and being carried into their homes.

He’ll be speaking for you if this mine gets permission, and you live anywhere near it. I live 1km from one of this company’s aberrations, and it has ruined the community’s lives with dust, noise, and traffic – all predicted and all dismissed at Public Inquiry. We’re only one year into a preliminary 4.5 year scheme, and wonder which will be the next nightmare prediction to come true.

Thank you for your comment Lucy W, I am sure as you wish to be so vocal, and state that I do not speak for you, you will use the public Session on Thursday coming to air your view?

Thank you Joe Henshaw, your voice from an area that already seems to be experiencing the problems and health implications that friends of the Ercall, and TANC, and others have been predicting will happen, is a real breath of fresh air reality, to those who constantly criticise the efforts of others to help in their way, to ensure a better community.
I look forward to Lucy W, putting her money where her mouth is tomorrow at the Inquiry, and saying HER opinion – she voices it so freely on the comments page, so come out into the light, and say YOUR piece, instead of your constant barrage of remarks to others about what YOU would have done.
DO IT, or shut up and leave others to at least TRY to stop this mine.

Thank you for that information PJ, I was unaware that anyone could speak. It would seem that alot of money has been wasted on this inquirey as its adgenda has not been clearly publicised.

I was planning a day off Thursday so in fact it would be quite an interesting diversion to go to one of these for a peep.

Do I need to book as I have better things to do than sit there all day?

Ooo err! Someones got their knickers in a twist. I merely point out that you don’t speak for the whole community, Pat.

I’m afraid that people like me feel too intimidated by people like you to speak at these events.

I trust that the inquiry considers the intimidation that is going on here.

Patrick Judson does not speak for me either – A mine SHOULD happen it will create employment (something lacking in telford) and ensure that Ironbridge Power station stays open.

All those opposed are simply making a mountain out of a molehill.

I see that out of the population of some 160,000 people of Telford, I am berated as I did not speak for Two, above.
Sorry,to those who feel differently but as I have said – you have your chance to speak and tell the Government WHAT YOU THINK – so use the chance.
You have had around 18 months to make YOUR views known, and so speak for yourselves – the attitude of “have better things to do” just about sums up your thoughts to the community and this issue.
No doubt Lucy W, you will have better things to do when the General election comes around, and people with your attitude allow the BNP to gain support due to voter apathy.

Pat Judson – Ok maybe 2 people out of a population of 160K in Telford do support this view on this article but that is 50% on this article who have no problems with this mine.

Whereas how many people will attend your public session on Thursday? I would guess no more than 100 people which is 100/160000×100=0.0625% so the crux of the matter is that less than 0.1% of the population of Telford has a problem with this mine.

OMG Pat now has the audacity to claim he speaks for 159,998 people.

I haven’t voted since 1997, but will in the next election. I will be voting BNP to stop the current rot, unless its nice weather and I go away.

I’m afraid that as you SHOUT at me on here, I do not wish to expose myself to public barracking, hence I will not be voicing my opinion at the inquiry, merely writing to the planners directly which carries just as much weight and as your single voice and costs the tax payer considerably less.

Perhaps all the non-vocal people just don’t care either-way? Ever thought of that? Or do you believe that if someone is silent you can lay claim to be their voice?

It seems that neither Lucy W, or our Welsh friend ACTUALLY attended todays session of the Inquiry when ANYONE from the Public could have their say – and their opinion.
( With Y Mab Darogans manipulation of figures, he could have a very well paid job with ENTEC )
The old phrase “Empty vessels make the most noise” seems very relevant.
The COMMUNITY took time to speak today, backed by the Council -in its ENTIRITY.

Mine local coal for a local power station, keeping trains off the rails. You’d think that’d have the green parade *and I call them a parade as they like to make a song and dance out of anything that might just speed up climate change*. Besides the point, its a natural resource that if used, would help the local community working and otherwise and would also prove to be a recession buster.

Maybe the population you speak for Pat just don’t want their lives discomforted? I mean, I know its an area of high house prices and all that. How do you think people felt when British industry and smog was all the rage.

Sometimes I wish the population knew how easy they get it. Maybe this is a strong reason for demoralisation.

Thank you for your rsponse Alex Evans, and for Huw Peachs support.
Mr Evans , are you aware of the Governments commitment to transporting minerals by rail as a “presumption for”?.
The sustainable communities act 2007, requires Local Government to reduce the transportation of sucstainable fuels for local consumption, to a 30 mile radius from scource to use.
As both Rugeley and Ratcliffe on Soar power stations lie well over the 30 mile prescribed limit, how can UK Coal be therefore complying with an act brought in to reduce carbon emissions, and improve local communities?
Coal sent by train produces much less than that sent by road, as a 29 ton truck, is only 1/3 of a coal car of a train.
The following section of the act requires a reduction in road transport.
If road use to transport coal is 3 times greater than rail use (which is preferred by Ironbridge power station), how can reductions in carbon emissions be possible?
Ironbridge is the dirtiest power station in Europe – having opted out of the air quality emissions directive policies.
Perhaps we should also opt out – of accepting opencast mining here.?
I worked as a teenager down a deep pit in Yorkshire – have experienced the life of smog and also what mining intense areas life is like, and at present, as you say perhaps the population that I speak for dont want their lives discomforted – I would have thought that it was a sane expectation in this day and age, as heavy industry declines, and conditions have improved.
Perhaps I not speak for all the community – but its a shame that those who do feel differently, chose to use a small comments section of the local paper to air their views, when the open arena of the Government public inquiry was open to them .
We import 40.1 million tons of coal per year, this coal would affect the UKs import by just 00.1, leaving 40 million tons to acquire from elsewhere – this is a fact, its a very small drop in the coal chain, but a very big impact and site for this locality.
Your comments are valued, above those of self proclaimed BNP agitators – who have no hesitiation to use intimidation tactics to further their politics, then hide behind claims of intimidation, which in reality, are nothing more than the truth, and facts which they cannot accept.
Thats their right – at present, its a free country, with free speech, no matter how repugnant the comments are.

Pat: You just don’t get it. I have pointed out that you are SHOUTING on this forum, and you are still ranting and SHOUTING!!

I am copying these posts and forwarding them so the powers that be can see how the Friends of the Ercall use intimidation to deter opposing views.

If you can’t be civil here, just how would you behave in the highly charged setting of the public inquiry. Quite frankly, I believe that if I had spoken against you views, my car would have been damaged and I may well have be assaulted.

Controversial or not, the Opencast Mine issue has got people talking and thinking.
Some I may not speak for – apologies to you – you had the cahnce to have your say – thats now gone.
Why woud the power stations of Rugeley and Ratcliffe on Soar have been mentioned as “receptors” of Huntington Lane coal if it was really going to Ironbridge?
Just for the record – Ironbridges preference for caol supply is by Rail – as it causes less disruption.

Pat Judson – Not everyone can retire at the age of 50 for some having a local company providing local jobs (UK Coal) up to the age of 65 is essential to live.

However I suppose you would know about that living in your ivory tower. If the mine was near to Brookside or Sutton Hill in Telford I very much doubt anyone would complain

In reply to Y Mab darogan – some have worked very hard in life to be able to have a pension fund to fall back on – and its not an Ivory tower, merely a 4 bed detatched, bought and paid for, and not in the area thats going to be affected, so no Nimbyism for me.
I will try not to shout – as it seems any use of emphasizining capitals appalls poor, sensitive Lucy W, and as for intimidation – well I will leave that to the BNP and its supporters – they seem to have that to a fine art – and for the record, I am not a “green” – I accept there must be coal in the grand plan of things – so let the money grabbing coal companies invest in the deep pits – where the good coal lies, not the brown coal of this area.
Having worked in a deep mine – unlike Lucy w, or I may be wrong on this, Y Mab Darogan, I know that this type of mining affects miners – who choose to work like rats for big pay packets(,Which pay for lovely 4 bed detatched homes later in life) and harm but their own health – not that of the areas surrounding them.
COPD,& Pneumonicosis are the legacy of working this type of coal industry, of which I have the former, so needing retirement early.
And if Lucy W had taken the time to see an Inquiry in action, she would have seen what happens – and the way its conducted.
Hving never smashed a car up, and you being in no danger from any kind of assault, your typical exageration merely shows your lack of insight, and the delusions of an over active imagination.
If you had taken time to follow the ongoing campaign, you would know that friends of the Ercall never advocate violence on demonstrations, or trespass upon land that is not public.
Perhaps she can quantify the BNPs attitude regarding this and protest/intimidation?
One published list, and look how they all began to squeal “unfair”, against human rights, etc.
What sensitive souls they must be, and therefore obviously unfit for any kind of realistic government in these current times.
    Pat Judson.
