When you consider that if they are lucky STFC will sell 22,000 tickets, out of a county population of 283,000 (2001 census),a representation of under 8% yet we are bombarded by endless drivel in the press and local radio, you would never have thought that they’d played a game of football before. What ever happened to providing for the majority?
I wonder how the taxpayers will feel next year when the local constabulary provides literally hundreds of officers to police the likes of Leeds and Millwall (if they don’t get promoted)? Perhaps STFC will like to dip into their deep pockets should they get through.

Either way i hope the Final will prove a good spectacle (i’ll be watching it on Sky in an english bar) & as a neutral (i support & watch Auxerre in France) may the best team win.

Norman & Monkey, thanks for the support. Maybe check your facts first though chaps? You should really know that the club ARE responsible for picking up the policing bill. They are also under the beck and call of the ‘old bill’ when it comes to holding tasty fixtures. Anything vaguely local (see Wrexham, Chester, Hereford) has predominantly been held on a sunday a 12.00pm. Policies like this, and the financial burden incurred, are bringing clubs to their knees all over the country.

Now, I’m sure there’s a NIMBY meeting going on somewhere where you can go and interfere with other people’s fun.

It seems that the root mentality is if you don’t support the football team you’re some sort of weirdo.
I enjoy watching football when players put their heart and soul into it, the last two times I saw them play I was tempted to ask for my money back.
I think you’ll find that the club are responsible for only minimal police staffing costs, the other officers are put on duty to ensure the safety of their colleagues. If the club paid up for ALL police costs they wouldn’t have enough money to survive.

If you dont support the football team then fine but why whine about it like some fool? I didnt realise you could get your money back if you did not enjoy the experience – where does it say that on the ticket?

Anyways fools aside this will be a momentus day for Salopand hopefully a successful one.

Norman – surely it is part of the police’s remit to maintain civil order? Hooliganism is society’s problem, that a minority of ‘hooligan’ types choose football as a place to congregate and cause disturbances is not the fault of the football club or the vast, vast majority who attend in a perfectly law-abiding way. Yes it is right that the football club should contribute towards the cost of policing matches but to make it pay the total amount would be like asking a shopkeeper to pay the costs of policing trouble-makers gathering outside his/her shop.

I can see where Monkey etc are coming from, just because they do not wish to follow the exploits of the football club should not make them open to abuse et al, it gives an impression of narrow mindedness by those willing to be sarcastic.
I think what they were trying to say was that there are more people in the county than just football supporters and the media has seemed to forgotten those people.
Likewise I can understand the excitement that supporters have wanting their team to succeed, visits to Wembley do not come every year, unless of course you are Man Utd etc.

FAO Y Mab Darogan; you need to check your facts friend. We have been in the top three or four best supported teams in the lower leagues for the last two seasons. Our average is around 6,500. I can understand the negativity of people such as yourself / Norman and Monkey but if you want to post incorrect facts then expect to be challenged. We have also sold around 21000 tickets for Wembley so there is a real following out there, just a shame that because you dont like STFC you have to resort to petty insults.

Thierry ‘O’Freddi; There is no intention of using insults. The County of Shropshire was always known as Salop. Our Latin logo Floreat Salopia means may Salop Flourish. The majority of people who live in the county always called Shrewsbury Salop. We know what it means in French and that is why it was changed to Shropshire, however, for those born and bred here it will always always be SALOP.

Y Mab Darogan – Shrewsbury’s average home attendance this season is 5664 and of this the average away following is 415 – meaning the clubs average home following is 5249.

Even this figure is a bit misleading as obviously its not the same 5249 fans who go week in week out. Around 2500 fans are season ticket holders so go to all games, but there are also a lot of fans who can only go occassionally due to work or family commitments. Over the course of a season around 10,000 people probably go to at least one Town game and consider themselves to be Shrewsbury fans.

If all these people brought just two tickets to Wembley (ie taking a friend or family member with them) it becomes a bit easier to see how the club can sell 20,000 tickets for a game when their normal attendance is a lot lower.

I can’t name another organisation in the town that regularly attracts 5000 plus people to its events, so while Shrewsbury Town attendances are small compared with the premier league, they are actually very good for a town our size and are one of the most important social groups in the town.

Taking the lowest crowd of 4134,played on a freezing Tuesday night in February there were only 28 away, which makes a home following of 4106.

Our highest gate was the play off against Bury with 1007 away fans in a crowd of 8429, which means there were 7422 home fans. Crowds they dream of at the Bucks Head.
