Growing school given £170,000
Monday 18th May 2009, 2:32PM BST.
A Shrewsbury primary school is to get a £170,000 extension to cope with rising pupil numbers.
Oxon Primary School, in Racecourse Lane, Bicton Heath, has seen its student intake rise steadily over the last 10 years with 362 children on the roll in September 2008 and about 400 this year.
Work started this week on waste land next to the school to provide an additional playing field and extended play ground space.
At present the school has one playing field for the use of pupils.
A public footpath will also be provided around the perimeter of the land.
The funding came from school funds and various grants.
Mark Rogers, headteacher, said: “It’s a big development. The contractors put up the site perimeter fences this week and the grass has been cut short.
“The school has an adjoining area of waste land which hadn’t been used before.
“During the last 10 years the school intake has gradually increased so we decided to use the land to extend the school grounds.
“We got planning permission about a year ago but there were some great crested newts on the site which had to be collected.
“The school community is looking forward to work starting. The wider footpath will also benefit the local community.”
Work is expected to be finished in the autumn.
