First victory for Newport
Monday 18th May 2009, 4:00PM BST.
Newport registered their badly needed first victory of the season in a low scoring thriller against Studeley.
The Audley Avenue side had been dismissed for 104 in just 36 overs but went on to dominate the match with a strong bowling performance.
John Prince and Nick Watkins picked up four wickets each as the Warwickshire side was dismissed for just 95.
“We set out to bat out the full 55 overs, but we fell a long way short of that,” said club chairman Bob Williams. “However, our bowling and fielding came up to target and we got the win which we so badly needed.
“We have not been helped with injuries and unavailability in these early games but with Rajat Bhatia set to join our ranks in the next week or so, there is plenty of optimism in the squad.”
Meanwhile, Whitchurch clocked up 217-3 from 42 overs in their clash with Milford Hall.
Fresh from his seven wicket demolition of Fordhouses last weekend, bowler Amjad Ali Khan this time took four wickets as the Shropshire side restricted the visitors to 152-7 from 42 overs. Whitchurch picked up 16 points.
St Georges and Aston Manor took nine points apiece after their clash was abandoned when rain stopped play.
Skipper Matt Tilt overcame an dislocated finger to take a vital wicket as St Georges limited their opponents to 101-4 from 23.4 overs.
An impressive 243-5 from 50 overs was not enough for Bridgnorth to clinch victory against visitors Fordhouses who managed 137-3 from 35.3 overs.
