One of Ludlow’s best-known figures, who penned a complete history of the town, has died suddenly at home.
David Lloyd MBE died peacefully yesterday, Prebendary Brian Curnew said today.
He said Mr Lloyd, who was in his early 70s, had been feeling unwell for several days and had withdrawn from an event on behalf of St Laurence’s Conservation Trust.
Mr Lloyd was the author of numerous books including one charting the history of the town.
Chairman of Ludlow College Ewart Carson said Mr Lloyd had been working on a new guide book for St Laurence’s Church.
He was a former mayor, churchwarden, chairman of the conservation trust and vice-chairman of Ludlow College’s governors.
Mr Lloyd was also heavily involved with the town’s historical society and gave numerous lectures. He was also a town guide.
“One of the first voices we heard when we moved to Ludlow was that of David Lloyd,” said Mr Carson, who is also a churchwarden at St Laurence’s. Mr Curnew added: “David has been involved with so many people and organisations.
His sudden death will be a shock to many, who will wish to convey our great sympathy to his wife Wendy and their family.”
Mr Lloyd was well-known for his prolific fundraising in the town and was responsible for generating funding for Ludlow Assembly Rooms and also for the restoration of the bells at St Laurence’s Church.
