Alison arrows in on new title
Monday 18th May 2009, 1:48PM BST.
Shropshire Alison Williamson proved she is as hungry for success as ever after featuring among the winners at the inaugural Archery GB National Series tournament.
Williamson, who is setting her sights on appearing in a sixth Olympic Games at London 2012, showed her younger rivals how it should be done as she took the top prize in the women’s recurve event in heavy rain and high winds at Evesham.
“The launch of this series is a fantastic idea, and I am delighted to be the first winner in women’s recurve,” said 37-year-old Williamson, who won Olympic bronze in Athens five years ago and beat fellow GB international archer Naomi Folkard in the final.
“It’s great to have a top quality tournament in this country, and it will really sharpen everyone up for the international events we compete in.
“It’s great for people like me, but it’s also a terrific opportunity for the up-and-coming young archers to prove they have what it takes to stake a claim for a place in the international squad.
“I have no doubt this is going to raise the standards of British archery even higher, and that’s great.”
Williamson hails from Church Stretton originally and her parents still live in the area.
