Leisure centres danger charges
A 74-year-old man passed off dangerous inflatables as safe in leisure centres across the country, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard.
Peter Morrell, of Prestatyn, admitted three charges of exposing members of the public to risk their health and safety at centres in Kingston-upon-Thames, County Durham and Norfolk.
A similar charge relating to an inflatable at the London Road Sports Centre in Shrewsbury was ordered to lie on file.
Morrell was given a conditional discharge for 12 months for the first offence and two conditional discharges for two years to run concurrently for the remaining charges.
Shrewsbury Crown Court heard the actions of Morrell were brought to the attentions of the Health and Safety Executive by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council after an incident at the London Road Sports Centre on June 7, 2006.
Mr Adam Farrer, prosecuting, said: “The prosecution say the defendant fell far short of a safe standard and that the degree of risk of significant injury was high in this case.”
Mr Daniel White, for Morrell, said his client had no money and had been made the subject of a prohibition order by the Health and Safety Executive and had not been able to work for five months.
He said: “This is not a deliberate breach, these have come about by doing them far too quickly and overlooking issues.”
