Garden show set to draw crowds

Saturday 16th May 2009, 6:59PM BST.

Hundreds of people are expected to flock to a Mid Wales show this weekend – despite a major road closure.

The Royal Welsh Smallholder and Garden Festival is being held in Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells, today and tomorrow.

The annual show traditionally attracts people from across the country to The Royal Welsh Showground.

Show bosses admitted they feared this year’s attendance could be hit by the main A483 route linking Chester with Swansea, via Oswestry, Welshpool and Builth Wells, being closed at Llanymynech.

David Jones, show organiser, said he was “disappointed” the Welsh Assembly had decided to close the road.

This is the ninth Smallholder and Garden Festival and Mr Jones said it was set to be the largest and most varied yet.

There are 350 trade stands and the Green Horizons exhibition, which focuses on how to save energy.
