Council offering £52,000 for clerk
Saturday 16th May 2009, 10:46AM BST.
Applicants are being invited to apply for the post of clerk to Shrewsbury Town Council with a salary of £52,052 a year.
The job, which is for 37 hours a week, involves being the principal advisor to the council and overseeing all the work, including managing staff.
Applicants will be interviewed by a panel of new town councillors.
Mike Croston, acting town clerk, today defended the large salary.
He said: “If it was a chief executive salary, it would be well over £100,000. It is in line with salaries for larger town and parish councils and Shrewsbury is one of the largest town councils in the whole of England.
“It has got a budget of more than £3 million and a large number of staff and quite a large area to look after.
“It’s population is more than 70,000 where as a small parish council will have between 2,000 and 20,000.”
The closing date for applications is June 8.
